After the End
An interdisciplinary study of what happens to people after a crisis is officially declared over, and what obligations global health institutions still carry.
The After the End project, under the leadership of Dr Patricia Kingori and hosted by the University of Oxford, is a Wellcome-funded 96-month research initiative that started in October 2023.
This interdisciplinary research explores the lived experiences and aftermaths of diseases, disasters and drugs in global health, focusing on how official declarations of an end to crises affect those left behind, and on the ongoing social obligations of global health institutions.
The work draws on history, sociology, modern literature and global health law. As Daddy Hassan Kamara, national spokesperson for the Sierra Leone Association of Ebola Survivors, has asked: can we say the Ebola crisis has ended when survivors still live with 23 long-term health complications, and who holds the authority to declare a crisis over?
