Where did you/can you find this scholarship opportunity?
I found my scholarship opportunity through the Pan African University (PAU) website. The PAU is an initiative of the Heads of State and Government of the African Union. It is a premier continental university network that provides top-tier postgraduate education aimed at fostering a prosperous, integrated, and peaceful Africa. The university offers scholarships to African students and those from the diaspora, encouraging applications from individuals who desire to play transformative leadership roles in various sectors.
I first heard about PAU through colleagues in academia and online research while looking for postgraduate opportunities. Specifically, I was searching for programs that would align with my career goals in data science, and PAU stood out as an ideal choice.
My scholarship was for a master’s in mathematics (Data Science option), offered through the Pan African University Institute for Basic Sciences, Technology, and Innovation (PAUSTI). The program focuses on developing advanced mathematics and data science skills, emphasizing solving real-world problems in Africa.
What type of scholarship did you apply for (merit-based, specific to certain fields, full or partial)?
I applied for a fully funded, merit-based scholarship that covered all academic and living expenses. The scholarship was specific to certain fields, such as Mathematics, Engineering, Biology, Robotics, etc and aimed at supporting students with strong academic backgrounds and leadership potential.
Merit-based means that the scholarship was awarded based on my academic achievements, specifically my grades and overall academic performance. It was competitive, and candidates were selected based on their qualifications and potential for leadership in their respective fields.
Who is eligible to apply for these scholarships (English proficiency/certain grades)?
The scholarships are open to applicants from all African Union member states and the African diaspora. For eligibility, candidates must meet certain academic requirements, including a minimum Upper Second-Class Honors degree, and demonstrate English proficiency. Additionally, there is an age limit of 30 years for men and 35 years for female (master’s programs) and 35 years for men and 40 years for women (PhD programs).
Did you/can you apply for multiple scholarships?
Yes, applicants can apply for multiple scholarships, provided they meet the eligibility requirements. However, I recommend focusing on scholarships that align closely with your academic goals and qualifications to increase your chances of success.
Application Process
What was the application process like?
Can you walk us through your application process?
My application process involved several steps. After registering on the PAU portal, I submitted my application for the MSc program and provided all the required documents. These included certified copies of my academic certificates, transcripts, recommendation letters, a personal statement, a research concept note (for PhD only), and proof of English proficiency. The process was straightforward, but it required careful attention to detail.
What documents were required?
In addition to academic certificates and transcripts, I needed two recommendation letters from professors, a detailed CV, a clear passport-size photograph, and a research concept note outlining my proposed research (PhD only). I also had to provide names and contact information for three university professors who could serve as references.
Duration (how long did you work on your application?)
It took me about three to four weeks to prepare my application. The most time-consuming part was gathering the recommendation letters, so I suggest starting with that early in the process.
What are your top tips when it comes to the application process?
My top tips would be to ensure that all documents are well-organized and that you thoroughly read the application requirements before starting. Tailoring your personal statement to the specific scholarship and program is crucial. Highlight your achievements, leadership potential, and how you plan to contribute to Africa’s development after graduation.
Financial Aspects
What expenses did/does your scholarship cover?
My scholarship covered tuition fees, accommodation, meals, and a monthly stipend for personal expenses. It also included health insurance and travel costs. The PAU scholarships are highly competitive, and the funding package is comprehensive, covering all essential needs.
Did you/can you apply for any other financial aid? Where did you find these opportunities?
Since the PAU scholarship was fully funded, I didn’t need to apply for additional financial aid. However, I continued my job, working remotely at the Institute for development, Sierra Leoneduring my studies. By supporting the team with online tasks, I was able to maintain my role and keep earning alongside the scholarship. This additional income helped with my family expenses that were not covered by the scholarship.
Studying Abroad and Logistics
What was the visa application process like?
The visa application process was smooth but required planning. I applied for a student visa, and it was crucial to have all the necessary documents, including my admission letter from PAU and proof of financial support. I recommend starting the visa process as soon as you receive your admission offer.
What is the process for securing accommodation abroad?
Fortunately, my scholarship covered accommodation, so I didn’t need to look for external housing.
Did you go to any preparatory programs before the start of your studies?
I didn’t attend any formal preparatory programs, but I did take some time to review academic materials related to my field and familiarize myself with the culture of the host country before I left for Kenya. This helped me feel more prepared for both academic and cultural adjustments.
